COMMEMORATING AFGHANISTAN'S 5TH ANNIVERSARY OF MEMBRES DE L'OMCThursday, 29 July 2021 - 13:00-14:30

Nouvelles: Event marks 5 years of Afghanistan's Membres de la CEA

Anniversary Événements provide an opportunity to commemorate milestone anniversaries for CEA members that have joined the organization since the CEA was established in 1995. These Événements help to shed light on a member's integration into the multilateral trading system and the global economy. Événements held to mark Membres de la CEA anniversaries are highlighted below.

Moderated byH.E. Mr. Xiangchen Zhang, Deputy Director-General, CEA

Emerged from the civil war and the Ebola crisis, Liberia presented a unique case in the accessions of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to the CEA by activating and finalising its process within a short period. Liberia became the 163rd Member of the CEA on 14 July 2016. This case, known by some as "Liberian model", comprised of key ingredients including strong political commitment to accession-related reforms at the highest level of the government, intensive engagement by CEA Members in the accession process, and extensive technical assistance and support provided by development partners and the CEA Secretariat.

This session will reflect on the first five years of Liberia's Membres de la CEA, including the impact of CEA accession on Liberia's economy and the remaining challenges facing Liberia as a post-conflict LDC. It will also provide a platform for an exchange of views with CEA Members and development partners on the way forward, with a Voir to reaping the full benefits from Liberia's participation in the CEA.

Interventions by development partners & Discussion on Way Forward

Afghanistan is the latest addition to the CEA family which became the 164th Member of the Organization on 29 July 2016, following 12 years of accession negotiations. Despite the serious capacity constrains faced by Afghanistan as a fragile and conflict-affected least-developed country (LDC), it has demonstrated exceptional commitment to integration in the multilateral trading system and global economy and set a high standard for LDCs participation in the CEA.

This 5-year anniversary provides for a timely opportunity to reflect on the results of the first years of Afghanistan's Membres de la CEA, assess the impact of CEA accession and the remaining challenges, including those recently caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and to exchange views with CEA Members and development partners on the way ahead, with the objective to maximize benefits from Afghanistan's participation in the CEA.
