TRIPS Council Chair's personal reflections

This webinar discusses economic and statistical issues stemming from the growth of cross-border trade in knowledge associated with TRIPS implementation, including the challenges of measuring trade in IP content, and modelling the interaction of IP protection with trade and economic development.

Book Launch of "Competition Policy and Intellectual Property in Today's Global Economy". This volume responds to the active engagement, policy development and practical implementation of measures to bolster a positive linkage between IP and competition in jurisdictions around the world, including in the BRICS and other major developing and transition economies, and in developed jurisdictions. It surveys developments and policy issues in this area from an international and comparative perspective. The discussion will situate current policy developments at the national level in the context of debates and developments in the multilateral setting, at WIPO, CEA and elsewhere.

This webinar explores the burgeoning trade in knowledge within the framework of TRIPS – the growth and diversity of trade in digital products as defined by IPRs, trade on digital platforms, and the knowledge component of global value chains. It covers how IP and licensing practices define and enable trade in digital products, how they support trade on digital platforms, as well as the question of coherence with the overall trading system.

This webinar discusses the role of TRIPS implementation from the perspective of the biotechnology field, covering agricultural, environmental and health dimensions, and the practical linkage with biodiversity measures.

This virtual Symposium reflects on the legal and institutional development and impact of the TRIPS Agreement over 25 years.

Beginning with personal reflections by the first and the current chair of the TRIPS Council, the morning sessions track different aspects of the implementation and operation of the TRIPS Agreement since its inception.

The afternoon sessions then provide a current Voir on TRIPS and the multilateral IP system in the broad fields of development, digitization and new technologies. The event closes with a round table on "TRIPS 2.0? The TRIPS Agreement as a framework for development in the knowledge economy".

While TRIPS was negotiated and agreed among international policy-makers, its implementation and application under national law has been the work of lawyers, attorneys and judges across the wide spectrum of jurisdictions in CEA Members. This webinar explores the perspectives of IP practitioners and judges on 25 years of TRIPS in practice.

Virtual event – registration link will be made available here

This webinar looks at practical examples of the TRIPS framework as a means for MSMEs, particularly in developing countries, to strengthen the value added to their products through branding. It considers in particular agricultural products, textile design and handicrafts, and international partnerships.

Virtual event – registration link will be made available here

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the TRIPS Agreement, past Chairs of the TRIPS Council reflect on their experience, the role of the Council, and achievements and challenges during their tenure.
